Shame, fear of exposure, estrangement and condemnation by relatives and society, discrimination, use of drugs in non-stop regime are constant companions of people living with HIV-positive status. The AIDS epidemic has been less discussed in recent years, but its scale and problems have not diminished at all.
Science has created effective drugs that allow HIV patients to maintain life expectancy and quality on a par with healthy people. Unfortunately, they are expensive and not always available, and the virus does not surrender. As of 2020, 1.7 million children under the age of 14 in the world had HIV-positive status. Of these, only 54% had the opportunity to undergo the antiretroviral therapy, which helps the immune system protect itself from the deadly virus and gives it a chance at life. The total number of people living with HIV in the world is over 37 million. In 2020, 1.5 million HIV infections were detected, and the number of deaths from AIDS-related diseases reached 680,000.
There is a strong stereotype that HIV/AIDS is a problem that affects more African countries. In fact, the statistics on HIV infection in Ukraine are depressing. At least 1.5% of Ukrainians aged 15 to 24 are infected with HIV. In just 9 months of 2020, the country recorded 1,802 deaths due to AIDS, including 7 deaths of children under 14 years of age.
Every HIV-positive patient has a story, often difficult. However, people are united by the desire to be close to family, to spend time with friends, to learn something new, just to breathe as long as possible – to live. We believe that the salvation of one person will not change the whole world, but the world for that person will undoubtedly change. With this mission, we help people with HIV-positive status to boldly step into a new day with proper social support, psychological protection and qualitative medical treatment.
